Abstract: The recent excitement around artificial intelligence (AI) has sparked bold claims that we’ve already achieved it. But these claims aren’t new. AI’s history is full of similar declarations. By examining this history alongside developments in cognitive science, I’ll show how fundamental issues, particularly the mind-body problem, have been consistently overlooked in current discussions about AI. Understanding these unresolved issues reveals significant limitations in today’s large language models (LLMs).
