Short Bio

Insectotròpics is a Barcelona-based artistic collective founded in 2011 by artists from different disciplines driven by a shared desire to experiment and create new forms of live performance. Its distinctive language brings together live video, painting, theatre, performance, music and technology, with video often acting as the backbone that connects and transforms the different disciplines in real time. Over fifteen years, Insectotròpics has developed multidisciplinary performances and projects presented across more than 20 countries all over the world, constantly exploring the boundaries between analogue and digital creation, reality and fiction, and process and final image.

Abstract

What happens when video, painting, performance, music and technology meet on the same stage and transform one another in real time? In this talk, Maria Thorson and visual artist Jaime Jiménez will open the doors to Insectotròpics’ creative universe and share fifteen years of experimentation at the intersection of live performance, visual arts and technology. Through a highly visual journey combining images, videos and behind-the-scenes material, Maria will trace the evolution of the collective and its artistic language through some of its major performances. The session will explore how different disciplines coexist on stage, with live video acting as a connecting language: capturing, transforming and recomposing what happens physically in front of the audience. The second part of the session will move inside this visual machinery. Jaime will introduce AAASeed, a live visual tool created by Emmanuelle Berriet, and share how Insectotròpics has worked with it within a European collaborative project, contributing to the development of its open-source version through artistic experimentation. Rather than presenting the software through a conventional technical explanation, Maria and Jaime will explore it together through a live conversation and demonstration, showing how drawing, physical materials and live actions can be captured, manipulated and transformed into projected images in real time. The talk offers a practical insight into collective creation, interdisciplinary practice and the dialogue between analogue and digital tools — not technology as an end in itself, but as another language for artistic creation.
